So half-watching Idol tonight and half-working on the judges training for my local RWA chapter's contest, I was struck by just how much freaking better David Cook was than the little hobbit boy he was up against.
It's not just a matter of taste (or sexual attraction on my part) he's just better. When they sang together, C overpowered A so much it was crazy. And when they sang with the bands, it was so clear that David Cook belonged up on a stage with professional musicians and wasn't intimidated, while David A was barely visible singing with his group.
But I was convinced after the final performance show that David Archeletta was going to win. The judges clearly wanted him to win. David C was great but not goose-bump worthy for me, so I was sure David A. would win.
But the right guy won. Yea.
Funny story. I was watched the results on my DVR and it cut off the recording just as Ryan was about to announce the winner. I couldn't stop laughing. Thank goodness for the web or I'd have had to watch the Vancouver version to find out who won--and it just started.

I didn't even bother watching the Idol finale because I couldn't bear to watch DA take the crown.
Don't you think it was unfair of the judges to practically hand DA the victory on Tuesday night? And when they showed the clips at the end, they picked the one moment that DC was a tad off key - when the rest of his performance was brilliant. I felt manipulated by the whole program...
Imagine my surprise!!
The right David definitely won. DA is a little cutey, but he needs to age about 10 years and develop a little maturity/edge.
I heart David Cook!!
I heart David Cook, too. And it was crazy what the judges did on Tues night. Simon even apologized to David Cook right before they announced the winner...
Confession... I did stay up to catch the end on the Vancouver station... It came on just after 2:00 am (over top of what was supposed to be the start of the CTV news.)
That idol song DC sang during the performance show didn't wow me... but when he sang it last night, I teared up a bit. Maybe I was just tired, but I don't think so. Cheesy song, but boy can sing...
What I think is really exciting about this one -- is DC's so interesting. It's not just he's cute, but he handled winning with SUCH grace. Such sportsmanship. It was unexpected both when he cried and when he brought the top 12 on stage with him - and that's not something American Idol is known for at all.
Husband and I were talking about why more of the Idols aren't bigger deals - most of them have faded into the obscurity they came from and I think it's such a hard business and winning idol makes it even harder - time and pressure and commitment wise - that alot of these singers just don't have it. I hope DC has it - I really do. I like him.
Why is this occupying so much of my brain? What is wrong with me?
What is wrong with all of us. Am seriously obsessed with the man, would buy his album today if I could.
I'm thinking the judges no doubt learned the outcome early Wednesday and Simon made the apology to save face, lest he be accused of being WRONG-O.
Hi Maureen, I blogged about this the past two days. I was livid at the way the judges pandered to Archie on Tuesday nite, particularly Simon since neither Randy or Paula ever say anything of note. I was so happy when DC was announced the winner and then my DVR cut off the rest. I agree with you that DC looked like he'd been playing with ZZ Top for years, and he totally overpowered Archie on their duet. And what about Carly Smithson and Michael Johns? I heart that performance.
I agree that the right man won. The judges were so wrong to DC I'm so glad that Simon got egg on his face!
I'm in the same camp as L.A. on the Simon apology. I knew DC had won the moment Simon said he was "too hard on him Tuesday night"... Simon had to know the outcome early. Really interesting Idol season.
Very interesting account! I had to miss the finals show, since had just arrived in Japan at the time. I didn't know the two guys sang together. The power of the internet (and Maureen's blog) -- keeping me up to date any time, any place. :-)
Maureen, I thought for sure Archie would win, too. And I couldn't understand it, because I thought DC did so much better Tuesday night, and was so much more deserving all-around (especially since he stopped wearing his bangs hanging over his forehead like Emo Boy). Yeehaw that Big David won.
LOL, same thing happened with my DVR. The only good thing was that I was watching it live as well as recording it, but when that idiot Ryan Seacrest made the announcement, my tv paused just as he called out the winner (my taping saying it was complete). It took me a few seconds to figure out from their reactions who had actually won:)
I couldn't agree more about DC. He's sooo much better than David A. I just didn't get the judges' on Tuesday. I'm convinced Randy and Simon were on crack:)
I thought DA would win after his performance in the final. Was happy to see DC win. They both will do well, whatever!!
This is funny, I agree with you wholeheartedly, I'm a fan of DC, even though I only caught about 3 episodes (including the semi-final and the final, and the Billie Jean performance) all season.
The day after DC won, I watched Youtube for ages checking out all his previous performances. I guess I am a cougar after all LOL!!!!
But you and your commenters have hit it; I think Cook has a bit more substance to him than the other winners, and he is a real musician and artist. With integrity. It will be interesting to see how his career unfolds ... I hope he'll do well.
