Gay Storms Ahead -- Beware!!

Okay... So when I first saw this on Moonrat's blog I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry. Sure, it was funny, but I feared that its target audience would take it seriously and so it made me a little sad about the world (at least our neighbours to the South), and angry about misleading propaganda and misinformation.

And then the brilliant Steven Colbert does a parody of it and I almost died laughing. Seriously. Have watched it six times already and laugh out loud, every time. "Oh God. The homo storm got me!"

Enjoy

I kind of sort of know one of the people who did this one:

Oh that Steven. That was funny as all get out. It's such a hot mess the whole issue. Church/State. Shouldn't it all be separate anyways? Don't get me started.

Thanks, Maureen. I hadn't seen either and, I have to say, after watching Steven's spoof, I wanna hug him :).

Too funny! Colbert's, that is. The first clip is just sad, on many levels.

phew. i know you saw some of the comments that came up on my blog already over this, but i was still surprised by the fallout. it's not exactly a secret that i support gay marriage, but here's the thing... even if i felt quite the opposite, i think i would have been embarrassed to have my views represented by that particular video.

but. you know.

This NYT op-ed piece references that crazy commercial. Very interesting.

Moonrat: It should be embarrassing for them. Hopefully if that video has any impact it'll be to help opponents of gay marriage see the silliness of some of the arguments made against it.

Louisa: thanks for that link. Let's hope he's right. One of my fav lines: "If it advances any message, it’s mainly that homophobic activism is ever more depopulated and isolated as well as brain-dead."

Gay marriage has been legal in all of Canada for a while now. Couple of years? (can't remember exactly how long, but it was before our current, very conservative PM came into power). But although the current govt actively campaigned against it, they've been smart enough not to try to reverse it. The majority of Canadians who were mildly against gay marriage, or hadn't really thought it through, are now at worst ambivalent. Would not make a good campaign issue. The sky did not fall. No storm came. :-)
